Praying for the perishing
“Brethren, we will never see much change for the better in our churches in general till the prayer meeting occupies a higher place in the esteem of Christians.” Charles H. Spurgeon
As we consider the ever sinking condition of what was once Great Britain we are both anguished and convicted that something needs to be done. The prayer meeting is a gathering not for proclamation but for prostration before God to ask Him to do what only He can do. We gather each Thursday night to pray.
The subject matter of prayer is the outreach and furtherance of the gospel message. We need a work of the Holy Spirit filling and empowering the preaching of the Word. We seek a campaign in His will and we pray that there may be deep conviction of sin leading men and women to repent. We seek His hand to guide us in all that we do.
We must live up to the Church calling. The truth of 1 Timothy 2 is that we are a mediating priesthood standing between God and society. “My house shall be a house of prayer for all nations” we are not looking within, we are looking out upon a dead, darkened world desiring eagerly to present them with a Living Saviour “who will have all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.”
Though the world may look upon the cross in disgust and as a shameful thing, representing how criminals were put to death by the Romans. To us who believe it is precious, revealing God’s strong out stretched arm.
We have a desire to pray for the lost ones of this generation and I finish this blog the way I started it, with a quote from Charles H. Spurgeon “If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our dead bodies. And if they perish, let them perish with our arms wrapped about their knees, imploring them to stay. If Hell must be filled, let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go un-warned and un-prayed for.” Let us once again desire to see men and women convicted of their sin and turning to God in repentance. Let us prostrate ourselves on our knees before God so that we witness a great turning to Him.
